Morning routines that actually work for neurodivergent kids
Small, sensory-friendly shifts that turn chaotic mornings into calmer starts — without adding pressure.
By Dr. Ananya Iyer
Mornings are hard for a lot of families, and harder still when a child's nervous system is doing extra work to get going. These tiny shifts don't require new equipment or a full routine rewrite.
Three shifts to try this week
- Lay out clothes the night before, together. Choice at 8:15 a.m. is not choice — it's overwhelm.
- Start with heavy work: three big hugs, or carrying their own bag down the stairs.
- Give a two-minute warning before every transition — not just the leaving-the-house one.
Structure isn't rigid. It's the container that lets a child feel safe to be flexible inside it.
