Starting therapy as an adult — what the first month actually looks like
An honest, unhurried walk-through of what to expect in your first few counselling sessions.
By Dr. Kavita Nair
You don't need a crisis to start therapy. Most of the adults we meet arrive with 'I've been meaning to do this for years.' Here's what the first four sessions usually look like.
Session one — an unhurried conversation
Nothing to prepare. Your therapist will ask what brought you here, what's been going on, and what you'd hope to feel differently. That's it.
Sessions two and three — mapping the terrain
We spend a couple of sessions understanding patterns, history, and current stressors — before we decide together what to work on first.
Session four — a shared plan
By session four you have a clear picture of your therapist's approach, a rhythm you're comfortable with, and one or two goals you'll return to regularly.
